The Union College Department of Geosciences is seeking a full time Laboratory Technician with expertise in stable isotope geochemistry. The Stable Isotope Laboratory and Sediment Core Laboratory technician will be responsible for overseeing a broad range of research activities conducted using a Thermo Delta Advantage isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS), Gas Bench, Costech EA, TCEA, Picarro L2140i CRDS, Micromill, 6-digit analytical balance, Coulter LS 230 particle size analyzer, UIC coulometers and autofurnace, Automate acidification module, MetrOhm auto-titrator, and an ICP-MS.
The Laboratory Technician will split their time between both laboratories, work with students and faculty researchers, train and oversee work-study students, prepare samples and standards, operate and maintain instrumentation, and conduct research. Major research projects include the Peruvian Andes lake and cave project, several other smaller lake core projects, bivalve shell geochemistry, other stalagmite geochemistry projects, and stable isotopes in tree-rings. Opportunities for independent research exist.
This is a full-time two-year position with the possibility of annual renewals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, data quality, and use of instrumentation in the Stable Isotope and Sediment Core Laboratories that support the IRMS and peripherals and the CRDS used for multiple isotope analyses of O, C, N, and H in diverse substrates. This includes preparing samples and standards, washing glassware, keeping track of consumables, and interfacing with lab users.
- Overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, data quality, and use of associated instrumentation including a Micromill, 6-digit analytical balance, particle size analyzer, coulometers, MetrOhm auto-titrator, and an ICP-MS.
- Quality assurance of data.
- Oversight of laboratory safety, waste, instrumentation status.
- Oversight and responsibility for undergraduate work-study students, including training and scheduling.
- Oversight, training, and responsibility for student, faculty, and visitors using the laboratories.
- Development of new protocols and writing clear documentation of currently used protocols.
- Conducting, presenting, and writing independent research.
- Bachelor's degree in a science related field with more than 1 year IRMS experience and/or a combination of relevant education, training, certifications, and/or work experience.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to be impartial and establish rapport with a diverse range of campus community members.
- Ability to pay attention to details, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment and meet established goals and objectives.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively at a height of more than five feet and to manipulate very small samples.
- Ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
- Ability to safely handle potentially hazardous chemicals while observing OSHA-mandated chemical hygiene regulations.
- Master's degree in a related science field.
- Previous experience with IRMS systems.
- Geochemical research experience, specifically with stable isotopes, that has led to publication in peer-reviewed international journals
- Experience teaching undergraduate students and involvement in undergraduate student-faculty research that has had a significant component of geochemical analysis
