Pay status and classification: Salaried, regular full-time. 

Position Purpose: Creates images used in print, web, video, presentations, social media, media relations content and initiatives, advertising, and more. Reporting to the Director of Digital Strategy, the staff photographer is a visual storyteller who produces consistent high-quality photographs to enhance Union’s visual identity according to established standards. 

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional who thrives in a collaborative work environment, has the ability to solve problems creatively and quickly and works with a high degree of flexibility, competence and professionalism.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties:

  1. Coordinate and produce regular images to be used on many of Union’s main communications channels, including social media, news content,, the Union College magazine and more.  
  2. Schedule and coordinate all photo shoots. 
  3. Serve as a photography resource to on-campus clients, including Athletics, Admissions, College, Relations, Student Affairs and more, working under the direction of the Director of Digital Strategy to ensure proper prioritization of requests. 
  4. Fulfill any photo requests of existing photography to the internal and external communities. 
  5. Help identify and ultimately manage a digital asset system to catalog and archive all campus photography.
  6. Provide basic photo training to campus clients as needed. 


  1. Bachelor's degree and/or a combination of relevant education, training, certifications, and/or work experience.
  2. 3-5 years of professional photography experience.
  3. Experience and advanced knowledge of digital photography, including understanding of cameras, lighting and associated computer hardware and software including Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, RAW file formats, color theory and management, and image enhancement techniques. 
  4. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment and in flexible work hours including early mornings, nights and weekends, as required to cover assignments.
  5. Flexibility and ability to shift priorities to accommodate urgent deadlines. 
  6. Excellent communication, time management, organization skills and attention to detail.
  7. Ability to move, lift, set up and break down photography equipment. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Prior professional experience in photojournalism, photography, communications or marketing.
  2. Knowledge of the essentials of marketing, messaging and storytelling.
  3. Appreciation of the mission of a higher education institution.
