The Data Librarian will provide expertise in a variety of data methods and types, supporting students, faculty, and staff in data discovery, creation, visualization, and dissemination. As a member of Research Services, the Librarian will be the main point of contact for data-related research questions and course instruction, and they will apply best pedagogical practices to foster digital literacy on campus. The Data Librarian will work closely with library and campus partners to support and advise faculty and student researchers on sustainable workflows and best practices to ensure the discoverability, accessibility, and reproducibility of their datasets. The Librarian will also train and supervise student workers to support the use of open data and data in our collections.

Reporting to the Director of Digital Scholarship and Public Services in Schaffer Library, the Data Librarian will support research services, the instruction program, and digital scholarship, critically assessing how data can be leveraged to meet our burgeoning campus needs. As a member of the general faculty of Union College, the Librarian will also be expected to pursue a focused program of professional development, scholarly activity, and service.

  • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum of two years working in the field of data instruction and research.
  • An equivalent combination of degree and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learner-centered pedagogy and best practices in library instruction and information literacy at the college level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the research data lifecycle. 
  • Experience creating, visualizing, and/or analyzing data for research purposes. 
  • Experience with data management plans (preferred.)
  • Demonstrated understanding of emerging data resources and trends, such as open data and data ethics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a team environment.
  • Must be safety conscious and be committed to promoting the value of diversity and student success.
  • Support student researchers at each stage of research as they discover, create, visualize, and disseminate research datasets through workshops, consultations, help tickets, and office hours.
  • Support, teach, and partner with faculty to integrate data methods and emerging data infrastructure into their research and teaching.
  • Collaborate with Research Services department and Digital Scholarship Initiatives team to develop and integrate data literacy program and resources into library instruction.
  • Participate in programs and services of the Digital Scholarship and Public Services division including general research consultations, student instruction, and faculty development, and serve as point of contact for data-related inquiries.
  • Identify and collaborate with appropriate campus partners, including faculty, on data-related curricular and co-curricular programs and policies.
  • Supervise student workers to support the use of library data collections. 
  • Collaborate with Content and Digital Library Systems, Special Collections & Archives, and ITS on best practices for data capture, documentation, storage, and dissemination.
  • Stay current and up-to-date with library data collections and broader data policies and trends, including open data and emerging data resources.
  • Contribute to campus committees and attend campus events to cultivate relationships supporting the library’s mission to enrich the overall academic experience.
  • Pursue a program of professional development, scholarly activity, and service to meet requirements of the position and promotion.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The minimum anticipated starting salary for this position, if annualized is $60,000. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
