Union College (NY) is searching for two Class Deans, to work in a newly established team of four Class Deans starting in summer 2018. Each Class Dean reports to the Dean of Studies in Academic Affairs (with a dotted line to the Vice President for Student Affairs) and is one of four class deans who share responsibility for the academic and personal development of all undergraduate students. The Class Dean oversees a class of students, taking on a class at the beginning of its sophomore year and following the same students until they graduate. This includes helping students make progress toward their educational goals and graduation requirements, working with faculty to support student success in the classroom, facilitating access to academic and non-academic support services, and supporting student transitions year by year through the undergraduate years to life after Union. We welcome applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the field, and applicants are encouraged to state in their cover letter strategies that they use to work with a diverse student body. The Deans are involved with a wide variety of issues, including academic advising and support services, personal and general advising, faculty outreach and communication, crisis management and disability services.

The Deans will also manage additional responsibilities in Academic Affairs, which may include (in combination or individually) national fellowships and scholarships, the Scholars Program, academic internship support, the direction of academic advising, and data management for student success, among others. The precise assignment and details of these duties will depend on the background, skills and experience of the successful candidates.

The Dean is also a member of the team supporting the Dean of Studies, and Academic Affairs more generally.

Class Dean Specific Duties:

  • Provide personal and academic advising to students. This includes collaborating with advisers, faculty, residential life staff, and other offices to track and coordinate student progress and support. This work involves regular referrals to, and coordination with, the Wellness Center.
  • Participate in regular meetings with other class deans to promote the support and retention of students.
  • Facilitate collaboration across Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to ensure student success.
  • Work with the other Deans, the Health and Counseling Center, Campus Security, the Title IX office, Residential Life, Housing, and relevant departments to respond to student and campus-wide challenges and crises.
  • Serve with faculty, students, and other student affairs staff on a variety of academic and administrative committees, and be an active member of the CARE support team that meets regularly to review students of concern.
  • Address academic alerts provided by faculty for students having trouble in their classes.
  • Provide programming for students aimed at helping them find success in their current class year.
  • Communicate with parents, as necessary.
  • Share supervision of administrative assistants with other Class Deans.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by the Dean of Studies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree.
  • Familiarity with higher education as a faculty member, administrator or advisor. At least three years of equivalent experience required.
  • The successful candidate will have strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, and will be able to work independently, while also operating effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience with, and awareness of, a broad range of student mental health issues.
  • Good judgment, demonstrated by a combination of common sense, sensitivity and understanding of the legal framework for students and the College.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • An ability to work well with a diverse population of students and faculty at an institution committed to high standards in education and research.
  • Comfort and facility working with data analysis to maximize student success would be an asset.
